Concentration means being able to free the mind from all objects of distraction—including one's own thoughts and emotions—and to direct it toward a single object—whether reposing it in a single state of awareness, or directing it toward a single goal.

Deep concentration is possible only in a state of relaxation. Where tension exists, whether physically or mentally, there is a separate commitment of energy, like the stray strand of thread that refuses to enter the eye of the needle.

The best way to develop high-powered concentration is to practice meditation regularly.

When the controlling faculties are in an untrained condition, the and the procedure of mental concentration is not good, not because the mind is necessarily weak in the autonomic department of the faculties, but because the mind is not properly trained.

When the self-guiding faculties impulses, passions, emotions, thoughts, actions and habits of the person suffer from lack of regulation, the person always lacks the power of mental concentration. Therefore you cannot learn to concentrate until you develop those very powers that qualify you to be able to concentrate.

So if you cannot concentrate one of the following is the cause:
1. "Deficiency of the motor centers."
2. "An impulsive and emotional mind."
3. "An untrained mind."

The last fault can soon be removed by systematic practice. It is easiest to correct.

The impulsive and emotional state of mind can best be corrected by restraining anger, passion and excitement, hatred, strong impulses, intense emotions, fretfulness, etc.

It is impossible to concentrate when you are in any of these excited states.

These can be naturally decreased by avoiding such food and drinks as have nerve weakening or stimulating influences, or a tendency to stir up the passions, the impulses and the emotions; it is a very good practice to watch and associate with those persons that are steady, calm, controlled and conservative.

Correcting the deficiency of the motor centers is harder because as the person's brain is undeveloped he lacks will power.

To be able to concentrate you must possess strength of mind. The person that is feeble-minded cannot concentrate his mind, because of lack of will mind.

Concentration, first, last and all the time, means strength of mind.

The person who allows his mind to roam at will will never accomplish a great deal in the world.will.

The more self-poised you are the better will your concentration be. Never be in too much of a hurry; and, remember, the more you improve your concentration, the greater are your possibilities.

When the mind can properly concentrate, all the energy of every microscopic cell is directed into one channel and then there is a powerful personal influence generated.If this energy is not wasted but conserved and controlled, this person is influential, but when it is the opposite, he is not influential those whose actions are slower and directed by their intelligence develop concentration. Environmental distractions: TV, chairs that are too comfortable, snacks, other people, etc.
Leave or re-arrange a distracting environment. Go to a library or a classroom when you seriously intend to study.

Internal Causes

Physical distractions: hunger, drowsiness.
Plan to study when you are most alert. Eat a high-protein snack. Do five minutes of light exercise to wake up.

Boredom, dislike, disinterest

Find a reason which satisfies you for taking the class; talk with other students and the professor.

Anxiety about studies

Make sure you know how to study effectively. Put the course in perspective.

Intimidating study tasks

Break up large tasks into achievable subtasks. Do the most intimidating task first. Give yourself rewards for progress and punishments for avoidance.

Personal worries

. when your mind starts to wander, write down the interrupting thought and continue studying. Or recall important points and then turn away from your book and continue to daydream. When you're ready to read again, do so. The trick is not to daydream and read at the same time.

The physical seat of the will is located at the point between the eyebrows. That is why, when a person wills something strongly, he often knits his eyebrows.

In meditation one is taught to concentrate at that point, since this is also the seat of concentration in the body. The more frequently and deeply one focuses the mind at that point, the more powerful his will becomes.

Dirty thoughts and feelings produce bad effects, both inwardly and outwardly. Inner confusion is the antithesis of concentration. Inner clarity, on the other hand, is almost the definition of concentration.

When the mind is clear, one naturally addresses issues one at a time. It is equally true to say that, by limiting oneself to doing or thinking about one thing at a time, one finds that the mind, in turn, gradually develops clarity.

Concentration, I said, involves, on the negative side, the practice of shutting out of the mind all distracting thoughts and impressions. It isn't easy not to think about a thing. Try telling yourself, for example, completely to avoid thinking about your most liked thing. How often, in the normal course of a day, does the thought of your liked things even occur to you? Never, probably, unless you live in arctic regions. Yet, if your mind is not practiced at concentration, the mere resolution not to think of the things that you like may be sufficient to cause you to think of nothing else!

To develop concentration, then, it is more important to focus positively on one thing at a time than to avoid thinking of other things.

Try to become absorbed in one thought at a time. No one can do many things at once and do them effectively. Leave then, for the moment, every other issue except the one on which you've decided to focus your attention. Don't strain: Be relaxed. Be interested in what you are doing. Become absorbed in it.

When people go to the movies, they may find themselves becoming effortlessly absorbed in the story, simply because it has awakened their interest. Focus your mind like that on everything that you do.

Whatever we do, we should train our minds to do it with one-pointed attention.All it means, quite simply, is to be interested and involved in everything we do.

Do one thing at a time, and, as you do it, give it your full attention.
